Life is a journey

…not a destination…

Hello & Welcome to Episode 20th of the Lighthouse, where I can tell you more about my week, I hope to instill in you some more happiness, fresh mind, joyful spirits, fueled with songs & photos!

This week a Team from the United States of America came to visit the operations of our organization: the challenges of accessing rural far away places, the climate change (very dry & droughts), lack of potable water, scarce food, little employment opportunities…we met & spoke with many refugees, from Somalia, Yemen, Ethiopia, Eritrea… It was heartbreaking to see that they have so little, and still, they manage to survive. On the hopeful side, we saw that our organization promotes resilience & empowerment, advocating for technical agricultural trainings & creation of job opportunities that can allow people to earn a living, and choose the trajectory of their lives. In life, we never give up & we do not lose hope.

This travel made sure to assess the situation & strategically plan for sustainable future solutions…all mixed with political will, individual will, motivation & joint collaboration!

Here the X (former Twitter Social Media) of the mission, Thank you so much for coming!

Playlist of the week

I kissed a girl – Katy Perry

Round-up photos of traveling

I am grateful that I have seen these places, met many people and could experience what it means to have so little, demands are high and basic needs need to be met.

I do believe in development and international cooperation, therefore I hope that through effective communications people will have better life opportunities.

What to read, what to watch

Taylor Swift TIME Person of the year 2023, read her life journey & storytelling expertise, on this link

Movie tip Leave the World Behind: suspense & thriller in this new Netflix movie starring Ethan Hawke & Julia Roberts. The movie is set in a home with a swimming pool, an ideal far away place, to relax and enjoy the beauty of trees & green areas, away from the hustle & bustle of the busy work of New York city life. The House, the Curve, the Noise and the Last One: the four chapters of the movie outline an intense & captivating plot that will keep you sit & totally immersed in the story…

TV show fun tip : F is for Family : a family of five, working as a Team into the Bumpy roads of LIFE (house chores, employment, children…) Set in the 70ies, with songs & cultural cameos, it is a great entertaining show for adults that enjoy the music & the references of this period in the United States of America!

Wishing to all a fun weekend, leading up to some restful holidays!

Ciao!

Dear The Lighthouse Readers,

I am relaxing & working from Italy, where the parents are. I am taking the time to read, reflect & further shape my personality ( in constant change & evolution, embracing it).

I learned that care & attention stand at the pillars of dedication towards people/human beings, that love for oneself is the basis for mutual love, that expectations for the prince charming are of no value, that no one is perfect; I learned that patience is key, going with the flow & letting things go are the keys to long-term satisfaction.

Read, Enjoy, Share!!

Big Hugs,

Friendships & Work

Like the lives of the cats, we are on our 7th Episode and hopeful everybody had a joyful July (it went so fast!). Highlights of my July was working on the United Nations Food Systems Transformation conference in Roma – Italy, pitching Djibouti’s food security and nutrition status & working tirelessly with the World Food Programme team to make sure needs of the populations are addressed & sustainable solutions in agriculture are found.

Previously, on 21 July, Tony Bennett, a genius of the American songbook, died at 96. The New York Times defined his as a “Jazzy Crooner, whose career spanned across years, and he remained amiable, unswerving and steadfast in longevity and consistency”.

Finally, on NPR, an interesting podcast on climate migration in Honduras, due to floods, rains, droughts, landslides, hurricanes, and extreme weather events, affecting agriculture and farming.

Dwell & Delight

Experiencing the culture of Maldives, through the eyes of my father, mesmerized by women dressed in black burqas, long-haired men in motorcycles, and the sweet flavor of cardamon tea, I lived a moment in time with him, and got to explore cultural new perspectives and richness in diversity.

Muslim country, national language Dhivehi and local currency Maldivian rufiyaa, my dad Eduardo and I got around the capital of Maldives, Male’, looking at the marvelous blue and gold mosques, as well as families strolling around the beaches and surfers catching ultra high waves by the city.

Boats everywhere, we spent time together walking and speaking in English, as locals could understand us – I wish I could speak all the languages in the world! –

Astounded by the similarities with India and Bangladesh – where I am currently living – I found flags of India and Maldives, and dwelt in nice Gender Equality celebrations on the occasion of International Women’s Day, on 8 March, themed: Break the gender stereotype bias and ensure a sustainable equality, starting from today, and for the generations of tomorrow.

As new personal experiences, we meandered around downtown, marveled at the Presidential palace, visited the UN offices, found the Public Broadcasting service – a young woman passionate about Journalism cannot miss the public service media of the country! – and swam for the first time in my life with clothes on!!

As Italians, we savored the delicious local gelato (approved!), found a bookstore ( my passion) and observed young promising talented girls going to school and building their future, through education, social justice and human rights!

As musical people & singers, we had the chance to create our own Maldivian playlist, that I am happy to share with my friends and readers, below.

My dad adores watching the sea, and the waves, and the surfers. He is the Sea. My Sea. He instilled in me the desire to keep exploring and traveling the world. Discovering Places and People.

During this holiday I prayed the Virgin Mary a lot, hoping she can listen to my dreams. I fully believe that we are created to do something powerful in this world, with our words, our kind actions, our smiles and our incommensurable wish to serve others and spread happiness!

I believe in Dreams and in the beauty of our Actions.

I love nature, plants, crystal clear sea and beehives, as women industriously and meticulously work for a higher cause.

I feel grateful because I am healthy, my dad loves me, and together we can continue Loving the world and its beauty in mystery.

The Mystery of Love, Be Earnest with your Feelings

Oh, to see without my eyes
The first time that you kissed me
Boundless by the time I cried

Feel my feet above the ground
Hand of God, deliver me

Oh, will wonders ever cease?
Blessed be the mystery of love

Cursed by the love that I received
From my brother’s daughter

How much sorrow can I take?
Blackbird on my shoulder
And what difference does it make
When this love is over?

Hold your hands upon my head
‘Til I breathe my last breath.

These are some of the lyrics of the song by Sufjan Stevens, the Mystery of Love, original soundtrack of the Italian movie “Call me by your name”. Luca Guadagnino, the Movie Director, had described “Call me by your name” as a family-oriented film for the purpose of “transmission of knowledge and hope that people of different generations come to see the film together“- He never saw it as a “gay”movie, but rather calls it a film about the “beauty of the newborn idea of desire, unbiased and uncynical”, and reflecting his motto of living “with a sense of “Joie de Vivre” in which “we should always be very earnest with one’s feelings, instead of hiding them or shielding ourselves”

joie de vivre

No matter the sexual orientation, I think on this planet we should value and appreciate all forms of Love, because it is very true that Love comes in Mysterious ways, that only God, or a superior nature force, drives us towards.

I am fond of the Idea and the Mystery of Love, this is what I am always looking in people, their stories and their feelings.  It is a daily discovery, the feelings are the deepest and the ever changing elements of our lives. When I go deep into mine, they keep on changing too! This is the reason why I do not stick to eternal love relationships, but I believe in eternal Friendships and Supporting one another as explorers and warriors of this Lifetime. I believe in sharing, hugging, traveling, but most of all, I believe in the Freedom of all Human Beings, Free to express themselves, in all forms, therefore, I want to be part of their lives, but not forever.

blessed by the mystery of love

I am also very fond of Music & Poems, that can transmit messages and words of wisdom of Love, and the Mystery of Life. I am re-reading The Prophet by the Lebanese-American writer Kahlil Gibran (1883-1931), and I highlighted here the idea of Love:

When love beckons to you, follow him,
Though his ways are hard and steep.

And when his wings enfold you yield to him,
Though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you.
And when he speaks to you believe in him,
Though his voice may shatter your dreams
as the north wind lays waste the garden.

But if in your fear you would seek only love’s peace and love’s pleasure,
Then it is better for you that you cover your nakedness and pass out of love’s threshing-floor,
Into the seasonless world where you shall laugh, but not all of your laughter, and weep, but not all of your tears.
Love gives naught (= nothing) but itself and takes naught but from itself.
Love possesses not nor would it be possessed;
For love is sufficient unto love

It is Joy and Pain, Happiness & Suffering.  Love is not only flowers and pleasure, but it is hard work and dialogue. I still want to help others make their Loves Rise & Shine, Being Happy, Joyful and Satisfied. In the process, i learn how my Love will be when he finds me.

freely chose you
Love is Free. And We all want Freedom. Therefore We ALL want Love. Love is about sharing and caring about other Human Beings, but never possessing nor wanting something more. It comes naturally, trust me. If it is not natural, it is not Love.

What I learned this year- 17 teachings 17 songs

The UN Fellowship Programme is coming to an end, and, with no tears, but a new suitcase full of memories & experiences, I am preparing the logistics, administrative, papers and luggages to bring back home, under the Christmas Tree, many smiles, books and faces of the people that guided and helped me.

last-week-in-dakar-12-17-december-2016-roundup-573

As I came in January 2016, unaware of what would happen, with just the curiosity & the fear of discovering a new country, a new continent, Africa, and getting to know the people, the places and the faces, the culture and the language, the flight back home would be rich in my heart of Senegal and of West Africa. With more energy to come back to Africa, a huge continent, ready & open to be discovered and to take care of.

This year I grew up as a person, &, as I put all my energy into work, into an amazing agency, UNESCO Dakar, whose mission is to instill Peace in the minds of Women and Men, through Culture, the study of Sciences, Education for All, through Freedom of Expression and Access to Information, Freedom of Speech and protection of Journalists in the lines of duty: This all, to build more peaceful societies, inclusive, multicultural, sustainable, democratic and willing to make an impact for their populations, which, in turn, cascade to the well-being of all, and to the peace & dialogue of all nations. Starting to know this huge continent, I feel very much inclined to the notion of PanAfricanism, ONE for all, although I am also very much aware of the challenges, the technical and logistics difficulties that can hamper development and progress.

With my little- the beginning of- the African chapter of my life– here are the first (of a long series I believe) of learnings that I wish to share & keep in my heart for the following steps:

1. Review your notion of Time

Things are slower here. This is a fact. Transports, Get things done, work, expectations from the society. Here Family is important, conversations are important. Saying Hello is important. Leave your watch at home, breathe and take in, stay calm and do not rush into things.

2. Patience is the key

Sometimes things do not roll out the way you want them to be. You have a rendez-vous, and the person does not show up. The security guard tells you that the bank opens at 16:00, and then you wait 45 minutes and nothing happens. You ask questions, you ask why, you get impatient, you tell him that you need to do other things afterwards. Nothing is going to stop the flow of time, so do not take it personally. Just review the notion of time ( and i suggest you stop looking at the clock ticking, i found myself losing my watch many times because of no special use)

People may forget activities ( which, in the Western world, are very much important to us) but they do not forget YOU as a person. So be patient, bring chewing gum with you to offer, and some candies so that you can strike up a conversation, let the time pass and enjoy the chats ( not feeling that you are “losing time” – this does not exist here, a conversation with a person ( a stranger or a friend) can always teach you something. I learned here in Senegal, the land of the Teranga (of Peace & Solidarity) where the Sun shines and where the Ocean is always there in front of you, that, as the fishermen taught me here, we need all to be fishermen, learn to wait for the good fish, and then – at the right moment-be ready and strong to get it. It is ALL a matter of time and patience, good waiting, good peaceful souls.

last-week-in-dakar-12-17-december-2016-roundup-342

3. Listening

Most of the times you will have to listen to understand what goes on. Africa is a culture based on oral passing, traditions and deep knowledge of history. Therefore, you need to stay silent most of the times, and listen. Moreover, there is neither so much music going on, nor advertisements to distract you on the streets or lights or decorations. You need to listen to people, and to your inner soul, what it tells you. So calmness, peace in your mind is something you need to work on. Positive messages, good childhood memories help, upbeat music, company with happy friends are keys to peace.

4. Imagine other ways of entertainments (id est, Books can become your best friends again)

Many times you will find yourself alone, with no family around, no friends around, in remote or isolated areas, with no one to talk to. A book and a candle ( if there is no electricity, no internet connection and no lights) can be good friends. A scrap book to write down your notes and your personal thoughts, to speak to yourself while writing can also be a great methodology to let the time pass and calm your heart and your solitude. No one wants to be alone on this Earth, this is why people started writing and singing, to reach the unreachable places on the planet and keep someone company, thanks to, printed documents, papers and the radio to broadcast songs or TV to look at shows, programs and images. You will find you develop a huge interior & imaginative life.

5. Speaking more about your life

(I am realizing i am following a thread, the bullet points follow one another) So, whenever you are not alone anymore, and you find company and good friends, you learn to appreciate the company, encourage others, just be happy and grateful that you are around people and you can listen ( of course) but also talk about you. Do not be fearful or afraid, you are not showing off, you are just telling your life ( and, trust me, there are many people who are freely telling the stories of their lives without you even asking). So, enjoy the ride, let yourself free, and share something more about your life, and your previous life experiences.

6. Make new friendships

By speaking, talking and going out all together, you make new friends, you sense the ones you wish to be around more, and you make your own choices. NO ONE forces you to stay with someone you do not like, and no one is telling you to speak with everybody. CHOOSE with your mind and heart, and keep the few ones forever in you.

7. Smile, Wait, and Learn

Once you do not know the answer to some questions, just smile, wait, do some research and be willing to open your heart, challenge the statu quo, and learn. You cannot be always right, and it is good that someone who knows more can guide you, teach you and direct you to better places and people.

8. Never EVER lose the Hope

This tip applies to each and every life situation. When there are no answers from a job, when you are waiting for something to happen, when you think you have done everything in your hands and under your control, but you lost all energies… please DO NOT LOSE HOPE. Keep studying, speaking up, sleep a little bit, drink a coffee / or a tea, and start again, with a smile. The smile is the most powerful tool in the world you have to counteract bad happenings and bad feelings. ( and if still does not help, put a song from the playlist below and dance to it!)

9. Adapt to different situations

If you a “traveler soul”, it is extremely important to learn to adapt to new situations, to be flexible and take some extra time to understand the dynamics and then take action. As we are growing older, we cannot be reckless and jump into conclusions, we should start thinking twice. The theory i elaborated is to take 3 days to make a definite decision: you think about it deeply the first day, you forget about it the second day, and- with your fresh mind, you make the decision on the third day. It can actually be a success.

10. Make time for you (do not be swamped by others- the problems are many, the solutions need to be carefully evaluated)

Especially in Africa, where everyone is always in the streets, they come and greet you, you go and greet people, conversations tend to open up quite easily and all of a sudden you start thinking about the conditions of other people’s lives, what they have been through, feeling empathic, and wishing to help. CAREFUL: we came to Africa to work and to do good to others, but there is a way to tell things, and other ways to burden your soul with questioning. It is important to learn the Buddhist art/philosophy of detachment, where you fully listen, are compassionate and understanding, but do not let emotions and feelings of others jump into you and influence you. This is one of the challenges of living life anyways. If you can be calm and peaceful in your mind, you can take in many notions, learnings, people’s stories, without any personal expectation of you to be there always present, but having the precious time to think about what goes on, and then, being ready and energetic to help with all your forces, with free mind and light heart.

11. High Dreams come with High Sacrifice. But it is worth the ride.

If you really want to make a beautiful and lifelong impact on people’s lives, you need to sacrifice yourself first, moving from one place to another, perhaps feeling lonely and not having always a loved one close to you, able to cheer you up and tell you “good, go ahead, great”. Encouragement is really important. I feel that inside encouragement and self-esteem really play a great role here. If developed- in harsh situation we all do- it is useful to live life and get to know what you truly want and how to achieve it.

12. Keep your Compass, Follow your Path, do some self-reflections and Keep your Heart Full of Passions

To keep your path you need to reflect. As each end of the day, we dream of something, we pray and we thank for the day, grateful and self-reflection are two of the assets that keep the heart full of passion, energy and willingness to continue in the path, to wake up everyday with motivation, energy and smile to go ahead (Andiamo Avanti, as my dad used to tell me everytime i was daydreaming about something) and pursue your dreams ( of unity, team work, happiness and improvement of the world- no more wars, no more climate change, no more hatred).

13. Learn the art of Humility: Do not criticize what you do not understand

Many times, especially when we grow older, we already come to a new place with our opinions about specific topics. We accumulated knowledge and experiences therefore it is very normal that we can fall into the trap of criticism, prejudices and jumping into conclusion in a fraction of second, not even considering what other people may think and say. For this, a high dose of humility and listening need to be applied in every situation. Calm and Patience play a key role. If we are happy people, we want to engage in conversation, we speak our mind and we make sure we make a good point and argument to defend our points. Then, “pour la force des choses”- for necessity- people need to come to agreements- to live well and in harmony in society.

14. Be Organized, & Be ready

I have always be a fan of the movie “La ragazza con la valigia” – a Girl with a suitcase, a 1961 Italian romantic drama film by Italian director Valerio Zurlini starring Claudia Cardinale, and this is the portray i have of myself. A girl ready to go, pack your stuff, and be ready for a new adventure, that can open doors to the new marvelous opportunities. So , do not be fearful, and GO!

girl_with_a_suitcase

15. If you have a Problem, Speak UP

Sometimes in life we tend to want to solve problems by ourselves, without asking for help. I think (and I learned) that people can actually help you out and make your life easier, faster and lighter ( above all when we are talking about Africa!)

16. Do not be scared. In Fears, Opportunities. In Curiosity, Learnings

In Chinese, crisis is composed by two characters- Danger and Opportunity. As I read the other day a blog post by Paulo Coelho and a Buddha Doodle image ( very nice) I am persuaded and I believe that Danger is High, but Life is One and Opportunities can be Many. So, if we believe in numbers and maths, danger can be a huge big one, but then opportunities can be multiples, small and big, so it is worth taking the risk.

crisis-danger-and-opportunity

love-or-fear

17. Have Faith & Trust People

This is exactly how you open your arms, and you fall in love. Each and every time. And how each African person falls in love with you, and you fall in love with them. And this is the reason why the journey- perhaps it is full of new challenges and tough conditions- must continue. The travel has only started. Armed with faith, trust and loving the universe, we must go on!

Buddha and the elephant

I have been listening to people and sharing stories on the importance of multicultural dialogue and traveling to understand one another and peacefully live on our planet.

love planet

After the horrifying tragedies of this weekend, in Sousse-Tunisia, Lyon-France and Kuwait City-Kuwait, I feel we human beings have not yet fully grasped the meaning of living under the same common roof ( the sky) and of looking beyond our garden ( and rather admiring and contemplating the infinity of the ocean that divides and unites us).

As Lao Tzu is being teaching me, change comes from within, and societies are formed by humans: we are and we create positivity or negativity, depending on how we behave, what we learn and how we transform this learning and the education we acquire into something marvelous. There is a nice quote that says “if you want to awaken all of humanity, then awaken all of yourself. If you want to eliminate the suffering in the world, then eliminate all that is dark and negative in yourself. Truly, the greatest gift you have to give is that of your own self-transformation”. I quite like it and it truly translates my thoughts.

However, there are many unfortunate cases where access to education is limited, and where the safety of learning environments is threatened by civil wars, emotions of violence, anger, hatred and lack of freedom of speech, association and thoughts.

I am learning to live the present moments and act without expecting much. With a huge smile, we must continue fighting for a better and more sustainable world, where doors can open for the most vulnerable people, and by reminding ourselves that there is a huge world out there where many people cannot enjoy all the facilities, social protection, health care, schools, transports, food and supermarkets that we have. By acting responsibly and being aware and fully conscious of our environment, we can open our eyes and plunge into other realities, and from the knowledge we acquire by being exposed to modern and efficient systems, we can learn and share.

“Be still like a mountain, but flow like a great river”– another great quote, by Mr. Lao Tse Tung. I imagine myself like a giant elephant, very still and calm, but with acenter of the circle “Buddha kid” inside my soul, a flame that is already ready to smile, bring positive energy, listen and hug people and the world around. If we instill this flame and make people dream of possible solutions, of a real world that are in our minds, we can make change happen and things come true ( just imagine Mr. Disney and his imaginary dreams…and now we all experience his dreams into fun theme parks, sharing happiness of families and kids!)

I am thinking of creating a “group of Idealists”, a team of curious people, excited about life and its thousands opportunities for human progress and development 🙂 anyone wishes to join, just get in touch with me and i’ll be happy to start working for the greater good!

Have a nice week ahead and look forward to your replies,

a big hug from Madrid ( really really warm one) water needed!
