Crafting Life, day by day

Wild women do, and they do not regret it…was singing Natalie Cole in Pretty Woman. The movie gives hints to how to move forward in life, practical and steady, with a smile and ready to face all sorts of challenges, emotional or practical- everyday life rent & struggling to afford good clothing.

On the side of practical life, there is the King of Wishful Thinking , the dream of the fairy tale and that all the Dreams of Love & Happiness come true. “You should never let anyone put you down” Edward tells Vivian “you’ve got potential, you should use it”. Money does not make you happy, the movie tells us- although they help- but it is about your willingness to go & do things. Trying, making mistakes, they are all part of Life. Studying, working, living with others, falling in love, interacting with people and making friends, it is all a Leap of Faith- bigger or smaller- depends on how you view it.

It is good to look at Life in Detail, from all the angles, but sometimes it is also good to let it go and let life transport us in new places, new faces, not worrying too much about everything that surrounds us and the willingness to control everything ( it is not humanly possible, for how much we would like it to be!). We are all part of the same boat, and, if we truly act with good intentions, without wanting anything bad for the world and for the people around us, good things happen. It is the energy of Gaia, of the Universe, who is always greater and bigger than us, like this amazing Italo-Spanish-American sculptor- Lorenzo Quinn, who describes – in his Facebook page here: Gaia as:

‘GAIA’
I often think of how precarious our existence is in this immense Universe: For life to exist there’s an innumerable set of coincidences that without which we could not survive.
We are constantly at the mercy of a much grander force.

The Universe is to us like a mother to a child for whom her love and daily care are needed for his survival.

I am starting to like sculptures, more & more. I used to be a painting lady, liking to paint Impressionists and admiring the beautiful pieces of art work in Art Galleries. I now see the beauty of material pieces of marble, and other materials, in front of me- to observe, but also to touch, and understanding that someone used their hands to mold it. To me it is a truly powerful message: you use your hands to make something that will last for a lifetime. In the featured image, you can see the famous Winged Victory of Samothrace, also called the Nike of Samothrace, which is a marble Hellenistic sculpture of Nike (the Greek goddess of victory), that was created about the 2nd century BC. Since 1884, it has been prominently displayed at the Louvre Museum of Paris, France, and is one of the most celebrated sculptures in the world.

I like sculptures because they tell you something, and they make you see in three dimensions, big in front of you. Plus, I like the idea of people molding and creating, putting efforts, passion and sacrifice in creating something tangible, for humanity to continue learning and building an historic legacy, also when we will not be there anymore on Earth.

It is good to fall in love with Art, who makes you want to do something, get ready, discover and learn. It is like falling in love with someone, who then pushes (unconsciously) to do something, to share life experiences and to continue the life journey together (Fallen, Lauren Wood).

Finally, I believe there is an insatiable thirst inside people’s human hearts and souls that only Art – cinema, sculptures, paintings, music- can truly – and temporarily- quench. The reason for the existence, for the things that happen, for all that happens to us, for the crazy ride and roller-coaster of life, for the ability to Love fully, totally and with absolute devotion ( is it possible to Love only one person in life, does it depend on periods of life, coincidences, finding someone right where you were looking? or is it about crossing good timing, willingness to share together a bit of life, or commitment & loyalty to be around in someone’s life, with respect and trust, and just stop looking?: what is more true & more aligned to our souls?

I invite you to go, discover more Arts, more Culture, more of what surrounds us, to also discover what our Hearts are made of ( so that we can mold it and craft life accordingly!) Is it enough? Ordinary Love– day by day- stone by stone, and then you will look back with a smile.

Eastside

Sunday thoughts. I have three passions (+1 cross-cutting): Art, Photography and Journalism. Singing all along. I like rhythm, time and depicting-documenting reality & the world. With a smile and an emotional touch to it.

I believe in free, independent choices, and I think that Art, Photography make you more conscious of what you have chosen. Journalism gives you a lens to interpret the world, providing you with healthy, well-researched and verified news that can enable you to take action in the world and be more aware of the happenings around you.

I also like optimism and positive news. In the middle of wars, hatred and violence, there is good music and good people. There are hard-working populations , gentle and kind, willing to love and do good for their society. We should take inspiration from them and admire in awe what they do for their country and for others.

Just a glimpse of my Sunday playlist for you, a little bit pop today:

365, new song by Katy Perry

New Rules, Dua Lipa

High Hopes– Panic at the Disco

Counting Stars– One Republic

Believer– Imagine Dragons

Eastside– Benny Blanco, Halsey and Khalid

Hold you back– Emotional Oranges

Thick & Thin– Lany

The transformational power of Culture for Economic Progress and more Inclusive Societies

I recently read an article appeared on Il Sole 24 Ore, the Italian financial newspaper, which features an Italian businessman, Diego della Valle, founder of the firm Tod’s (leather bags and shoes) advocating for more culture & work in the Italian society. He, who privately financed the renovation of the Colosseum, one of the historic symbols of Italy, recognized the power of cultural heritage as the foundation of a new political economy.

A new spur in the economic wheel could be made possible by financing culture, preserving the cultural heritage and breathing history and as an economic tool for development ( both for tourism inbound and for Italians to truly enjoy their world heritage and take care of it). This trend of strengthening public-private business relationships can be a turning point and a truly important element in the development of societies where young people still struggle to find a job, and where social exclusion appears on the agenda of the day.

New forms of dialogue, multicultural understanding, tolerance and thus, progress, is possible thanks to the power of culture. Culture is everywhere and can be expressed through art, poetry, writings, literature, comics, magazines, newspapers, movies and cinema, visual and audio content, radio and television, music, fashion, design, architecture. The opportunity to increase local participation and thus include every citizen in the decision-making process and in the local sphere through the artistic expression of people in the communities, local artists and creative industries is key to expand the basin of development , foster creativity, learn to live together and build more conscious, responsible, ethical, sustainable and inclusive societies, based on knowledge sharing, understanding of differences and richness in diversity.

The power of Culture is mostly shown in cities. A good example materialized yesterday when I was visiting with a friend Matadero, a multidisciplinary open cultural and creative contemporary space that the town hall of Madrid opened in 2006 to favor the exchange of ideas and the creative participation of the citizens to create, offer food for thoughts, learn and enjoy.

Another project that caught my attention was Los Madriles, a urban development project to upgrade the state of the neighborhoods of Madrid by, for example, creating new green spaces and gardens, encouraging artistic development and opening cultural and social community centers. If you check the local initiatives of citizens in the city here, a map shows the projects and initiatives developed within the different districts, divided by themes: from sustainable urban spaces and sustainable consumption, to urban art, cinema, sports and education, passing by collaborative economy initiatives and projects to reach a higher level of social inclusion, respect of labor rights and equality among people and same opportunities no matter the  genders and the vulnerability of people.

These initiatives generate dialogue, sharing of knowledge, tools and experiencesOpen spaces, free and for everyone, where you can go, sit and study in the computer labs, where you can go with your kids and play and have a picnic with your friends and a safe space where you can read and consult books and publications. A dynamic space for the community and to really feel part of the the city you are in and of the global village that surrounds you. I am learning that urban development, if it is sustainable and it includes all, can benefit the society and the people living in it, decreasing levels of violence and crime and allowing a more prosperous ground for ideas generations, open-mindedness and peoples’ understanding,

For more projects on urban development, local economic development, safer and more inclusive cities on a local and international level, check the policy papers of UN-Habitat, the Human Settlements Programme of the United Nations, here.

For more projects encouraging the building of more peaceful and inclusive societies, in the framework of cultural expression, creative industries, education and knowledge sharing and management and scientific research, i can redirect you to UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, here.

Let’s work for the advancement and the sharing of Culture and Knowledge within our living spaces, and, thanks to technology and social media, let’s expand and share our experiences for a more conscious, positive and impactful world where every voice is heard and can make a difference in our lives.

Ciao and see you soon!
